Throw Back Purchase TBR:

I picked this book series up over the summer and it seems like the prefect read to tackle this time of year!

Holly Cathers and her twin cousins have just graduated from high school, and they’re moving on toward their first semester of college. But no matter where they go, they will never be entirely free of their past. The three are descendants of a powerful coven of witches — in constant danger from a rival clan.

Holly learns from a vision that Jer is still alive. As leader of the coven, she resolves to rescue him despite the fact that he is a member of the Deveraux clan and therefore her enemy. But her efforts are thwarted when her aunt reveals the nature of an ancient curse visited upon all Cathers witches. It becomes clear to Holly that the death of her parents was no accident, and a similar plague is sure to fall on anyone she grows close to. As her power strengthens, can Holly escape her destiny? And if her destiny includes Jer, does she want to?

In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor with her sisters and their father and stepmother. Once there were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls’ lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last–the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge–and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.

Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that her sister’s deaths were no accidents. The girls have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn’t sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who–or what–are they really dancing with?

When Annaleigh’s involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family–before it claims her next. House of Salt and Sorrows is a spellbinding novel filled with magic and the rustle of gossamer skirts down long, dark hallways. Get ready to be swept away.

“An eerie, lovely Twelve Dancing Princesses retelling full of ghosts and gods and a fascinating waterfront world and I’m reading it from behind my fingers.”–Melissa Albert, New York Times bestselling author of The Hazel Wood

My Thoughts:

I really did enjoy the book. I wish there was some type of family tree to make the understanding of who the sisters where because it was hard to remember who is who. I thought this was such a eery read and it was super compelling. I really did enjoy the setting of the book and also the main character as well. I thought the world building in this book could have been stronger at points and clearer. I really did enjoy the romance that was tossed in and it was very fast pace read. Sometime the framework and the plot was harder to follow, but overall if you are looking for a creepy fall read set at a beach place with fairytale tossed in, this might be the read for you.

Two doors.

Two choices.

Life or death.

Kateri, an arrogant warrior princess, has to fight in the arena against her suitors to win her right to rule, and she is desperate to prove to her father that she is strong enough to take over his throne and rule the kingdom. But when she finds out her final opponent, she knows she cannot win. Kateri flees to the desert to train under the enemy she hates the most and the only one who might be able to give her a shot at winning. But what Kateri discovers in the desert twists her world—and her heart—upside down.  There in the sand, away from the comforts of the palace, Kateri’s perception of her father is challenged and she discovers the truth about his treatment of her people. When she returns to the kingdom, the fate of the one she loves lies behind two doors in the arena—one door leads to happiness, and the other door releases the tiger.

My Thoughts:

I really adored this read. It is the first solid standalone that I felt was able to tell a complete story in one book. I really loved the main character and felt so connected to her. I also thought that this book was filled with so many other other secondary characters that I really enjoyed. I also really enjoyed the world building in this novel and really thought this setting was so well done. The romance in this book grew on me so much. I really did enjoy the fast pace elements of this novel. I am so excited to read more by this author in the future
